TOP 10 SHOWS OF 2005

CLARKEY's PICKS

#10 Two and Half Men
I just started to watch this show and let me tell you, it’s pretty damn funny. Charlie Sheen is Charlie, a womanizer living with his brother, Alan (played by Jon Cryer) and Alan’s son (played by Angus T. Jones). All 3 shine in their roles and the numberous jokes made at Alan’s expense by Charlie are priceless.

#9 The Colbert Report
Forget the Daily Show, it’s all about the Colbert Report. Don’t get me wrong, I still think it’s a good show, it just that the only reason why I watched the Daily Show was for Stephen Colbert’s “This Week in God”. His own show is great and his interview antics are freakin hilarious. I loved when he was interviewing Tim Robbins and kept asking him dual questions, like “What was your favourite movie experience and why do you hate our troops so much?” Priceless.

#8 Everybody Hates Chris
Any show that tells the story of Chris Rock’s childhood, you know is going to be good. Rock narrates his childhood seen through his eyes. His cheap ass father is hilarious, his mother shines in her role and the guy who plays Rock is a hoot to watch as he is constantly picked on by bullies or targeted for chores by his mother. His brother and sister are solid as well. Overall, a very good comedy about how everyone hated Chris Rock when he was a kid.

#7 The Office
I just started watching this show as well and wow, it’s freakin hilarious. Steve Carell is great as Michael, the weirdest boss in the business world. He rarely does work, unless he is forced to and spends most of the time talking to camera. The documentary style of shooting is a refreshing look and making it not like every other recycled crappy comedy. Rainn Wilson is absolutely hilarious as the Michael’s unoffical sidekick, Dwight, but my favourite characters have to be the duo of Pam (Jenna Fischer) and Jim (John Krasinski).

#6 Reunion
Fox has cancelled yet another awesome show. It must be their signature, cancelling good shows. The show tells the story of 6 friends and how one of them is killed on the eve of their 20 year high school reunion. Each episode is a year. The relatively unknown cast are great in their respected roles. My personal faves are Aaron (Dave Annable) and Jenna (Amanda Righetti, aka Hailey Nichol from The O.C.) The detective on the case is sure that one of them killed their friend, mainly because he holds a grudge. The secrets are revealed throughout the years leading up to 2006. But we will never find out all of the secrets since it will be off the air, which is a shame.

#5 The War at Home
Michael Rapaport is the perfectly cast as a dad trying to raise 3 teenage kids ranging from 13 to 16. At times, he comes across as the worst dad ever, but he manages to pull off some great lines. Especially when he talks to the camera in an all white room. The things that he and his family members say in there is sure comedic brilliance. His wife is the better parent and has some great lines as well. His two boys are total opposites of each other; one being borderline gay and the other being a smartass. The reason why I continue to tune in is for his daughter, Hillary (played by the lovely Kaylee DeFer), who is the hottest TV daughter on a sitcom since Kaley Cuoco on 8 Simple Rules.

#4 Family Guy
It’s back! The new episodes are just as great as the old ones. Seth McFarlene is one of the funniest men in the TV industry. This outrageous cartoon is one of the best things that Fox has done. It’s my favourite cartoon, forget the Simpsons or South Park, they’re nothing compared to this gem. Just freakin hilarious.

#3 My Name is Earl
I’ve always been a fan of Jason Lee, mainly from the Kevin Smith’s movies such as Chasing Amy, Dogma and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. He is great as Earl, the douche bag hick who is trying to turn his life around by being a nice guy and reversing all the bad things he’s done. All 256 of them. He got the idea from karma, which is explained by Carson Daly. He wins 100,000 bucks from a scratch card and uses the money to cross things off his list. Ethan Suplee is great as his brother, who helps him and Jamie Preisely is hilarious as Earl’s ex wife, who tries to get the money throughout the show.

#2 How I Met Your Mother.
The funniest show on TV right now. The premise is a “future” Ted (voiced by Bob Saget) telling his kids how he met their mother. We never find out who the mother is, but we see a lot of promising candidates. Josh Radnor plays Ted to perfection. Ted lives with his best friend Marshall (played by the great Jason Segal) and Marshall’s finacee, Lily (played by American Pie’s Alyson Hannigan). He gets a lot of advice by the lovely Robin (Canada’s own, Cobie Smulders) and the man, the legend: Barney (played by Fucking Neil Patrick Harris). Barney is the reason why this show is just brilliant. Everything the man does is freaking awesome. Suit up, it will be legendary and have you met Ted?

#1 Lost
This is the best show that has ever graced the TV industry. J.J. Abrams has created the best show ever. In over a season and half there has yet to be a bad episode. Amazing. The characters are perfectly cast and the stories, mainly the backstories are just incredible. You know the story; a plane crashes, the survivors are haunted by a mysterious force on the island. The simple concept of the island setting allows for great character development, brilliant storylines and just an overall brilliance that has never been shown on TV ever. I cannot praise this movie too much. It’s just sheer brilliance. Easily the best show of the year.
